It turned out that the used HP Universal Printing PCL 6 in version 61.185.1.20412 does not work with Edge. We'd switched to HP Universal Printing PCL 5 version 61.180.1.20062 and the problem was solved. PDF printing out of Edge is now working without crashing the print spooler on the print server.
